happening right now. you can see the heavier line of snow is pulling away from the new york city area. you have the snow from long island, connecticut, rhode island, on into boston area and on into maine, as well. we believe there will be accumulations there. snowfall totals, at one point, we were getting five to six inches per hour in connecticut. with a blinding, driving wind of almost hurricane-force. you have five inches of snow coming in the boston area. we believe you could have five to eight in that area, depending on how light and fluffy that snow continues to be during the day today. how about a wind forecast? from this storm, 83-mile-per-hour winds in martha's vineyard. that's more than hurricane-force winds in martha's vineyard during the event of this snowstorm. connecticut, 76-mile-per-hour winds to 82-mile-per-hour winds. boston 76-mile-per-hour winds. long island, 60-mile-per-hour winds. in long island, we have reports of hundreds of cars, stranded. we have the l.i.e. shut down. we have the southern state parkway shut down. people were out in the storm and got trapped. their

inches of snow in new york city. take a look at the snowfall totals we've got on the boards for you this morning. with some places in connecticut coming in about 34 inches of snow. st. james, new york, almost 30 inches of snow. boston right now -- remember, this is a blowing, blowing, driving snow. it's been very difficult to measure. in the entire overnight event of this storm, with 50-mile-per-hour, 60-mile-per-hour winds. we have boston at a preliminary number of about 18 inches. ginger's been out measuring that this morning. and new york city, because it's almost impossible, everything's in drifts and everything was blowing around. eight to ten inches of snow there. quick look at the radar. we'll show you what's happening right now. you can see the heavier line of snow is pulling away from the new york city area. you have the snow from long island, connecticut, rhode island, on into boston area and into maine, as well. we believe there will be acc accumulations there. at one time, we were getting five to six inches per hour in connecticut. with a blinding, driving wind of almost

live picture from new york city where you can see the snow piling up. it is all part of a massive storm pummeling the northeast including high winds and threats of flooding. the national weather service says up to three feet of snow could fall on new england before the end of the weekend 5,000 homes and businesses are without power with massachusetts and rhode island the hardest hit. a coastal flood warning is in affect from new york to main and governors in five states have already declared a state of emergency. >> this will allow us to implement emergency measures to ensure the safety of our residents and take appropriate steps to mobilize state assets. there are a thousand national guard members on duty now. we expect to build that up to nearly 5,000 over the course of the weekend. >> massachusetts took the rare step of banning most car travel on state roads. connecticut has closed state highways to all but emergency vehicles. and the northeast storm has forced more than 4700 flight cancellations and 83 of those were in and out of sfo today. all major airports in new york and b
